A MULTIPURPOSE VASCULAR COORDINATOR
THE 21 st CENTURY ADDITION TO THE VASCULAR SURGERY TEAM

Serviço: Maimonides Medical Center - Brooklin - NY
Autores: William R. Yorkovich; Enrico Ascer

With the widening scope of computer use in every aspect of medicine, expanding magnitudes of information to assimilate, and increasing legislativo regulation of medicine, vascular surgeons who maintain proficiency and fully develop their practices are rapidiy becoming overwhelmed. Thus, we propose the creation of a new position in an attempt to fulfïll these present and future needs.

The two primary requirements for this profession are; l) an extensive medical-surgical background to facilitate a meaningful level of interaction with the surgeon and 2) proficiency in the design and operation of a cumputerized database that exploits the relationships between the clinical, academic, and administrative áreas of interest in the practice. Secondary skils are: l) fundamental statistical analisys; 2) research project design; 3) original artwork creation and medical illustration and 4) desktop publishing/electronic presentation. Candidates include experienced Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners who will share paralell goals with the Vascular Surgeon, but maintain a primary focus on technology and implementation of the electronic medical record database.

This database provides a means for immediate access to follow-up notes, operative records, laboratory values and diagnostic images to augment ongoing clinical decision making. Ceaseless statistical analysis of the ensuing data will immediately identify trends adversely affecting quality assurance, provide a base for experimental and clinical research projects, provide supportive data for billing purposes, and satisfy insurance, hospital and governamental reporting requirements. Accordingly, the Multipurpose Vascular Coordinator should make a positive impact on the 21 st century vascular surgery team.
